A Crayon Prayer

-When I was four-years-old, I picked up a blue crayon and a piece of scrap paper, and formed the letters that spelled the words, ”The Lord is Good.”
With childish enthusiasm, I scampered off to deliver this all important message to the one it was intended for … my dad.
I found him busy with coffee in one hand and a newspaper tucked under his arm, hurrying out the front door in order to make his morning deadline.
I remember running after him as fast as my little feet would take me, tugging at his trousers, and insisting on his undivided attention. He lovingly stopped, leaned down, and took the small wade of paper from my hand.
I remember watching him as he unfolded the note. His mouth slowly began to slant upward into the deep-crease of a half-smile. He promptly patted me on the head, folded the tiny paper, and inserted it into his wallet.
Well, that scene took place some fifty-years ago and that special note is still, to this day, neatly folded in the billfold of my dad’s wallet.
Sure, it’s a little tattered and worn on the edges, but the large -stick shaped letters are still clearly readable and more importantly, the message behind the words.
I often wonder how many times my dad revisits God’s message to him by way of his little girl and her blue crayon. Isn’t it funny how the small moments in life can sometimes become so etched in our memories, as deep and lasting impressions?
My precious father is now in the full-time care of a nursing home, and I visit him often. I still see that wonderful, creased, half-smile every once in a while. I’m often reminded of God's promise that what He has begun in my dad, He will be faithful to complete. All of the seeds that were planted within the soil of my father's heart, (though unseen for a time) will always produce a harvest of joy in the fullness of God’s perfect timing.
