Hope in Huliopole: Terry Meeuwsen's Journal (part 6)

CBN.com Our "God Adventure" continued over the weekend in Kiev with a wonderful Easter Celebration! Orthodox Easter fell on May 1st this year. "May Day" is seriously celebrated here in Ukraine so it was a double celebration.

The CBN staff and I spent Sunday celebrating at several different churches. The contrast was amazing between the traditional, reverent Orthodox Celebration and the evangelical charismatic services. I attended what was similar to a Christian rock concert as hundreds of young Ukrainians danced, jumped, and celebrated the resurrection of our Lord and Savior. I then spent the afternoon at Independence Square as thousands gathered in the very place where "The Orange Revolution" took place only a few short months ago.

Before we arrived back in Kiev, we had the opportunity to visit a remote orphanage in Huliopole, Ukraine. Children are sent to Huliopole if they can't keep up in class at a regular orphanage or if they require special assistance. Sometimes the child's dilemma is as simple as ADHD or difficulty grasping the concept of math.

Sasha and TerryWe met a wonderful boy named Sasha. His mother never sent him to school, then she abandoned him. He is a bright boy with a wonderful smile. But he was sent to Huliopole because he could not read and write in the second grade. Many orphanages in Ukraine do all they can for children, but they simply do not have the resources to help special situations like Sasha's. VERY FEW people travel to Huliopole (if you could see the roads you'd know why). Only one child has ever been adopted from there.

BUT CBN's OPERATION BLESSING IS COMMITTED TO HELPING THIS ORPHANAGE. The staff brought vitamins, school supplies, and toys for every child. We were greeted with shouts of cheer and tears of appreciation as the director said, "Please tell people in America we are here, and the children need families." CBN established a relationship with this orphanage and will not forget them. They will continue with humanitarian help.

Our week ahead in Kiev will include visiting other childrens' facilities and meeting children who live on the streets, under bridges, and in the sewer system. Please pray that we will be a blessing to all those who we meet.

The adventure continues... Read Part 7.
