Courage

As we celebrated the first anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attack, a word was thrown around which deserves more thought. Courage was attributed to many of the brave men and women who participated in the rescue efforts on that grim day in September.
Story after story has emerged over the last year of people risking their lives to save others. Men and women walked or ran into life-threatening situations that day, in spite of fear and overwhelming odds that they would not likely return.
According to the Websters New Collegiate Dictionary courage means “a human quality which keeps one going in the face of opposition or danger”. But what would possess a person to risk their life to save another? Is it really human strength that gives brave men and women the courage to rush into places, when their senses are sounding warning bells?
Joshua learned from God where his strength would come from before he went in to conquer the many inhabitants of the Promised Land. In Deuteronomy 31:6 he was told, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.”
I have listened to several tales of survivors and heroes from the 9/11 attack. Many of these people spoke of the strength God gave them during the worst of times on that monumental day; courage to do things they would not normally believe possible.
The next time you face opposition or danger in your workplace, remember that although it’s unlikely you will face the danger of the brave heroes of that fateful day, you can still draw from the same strength they did. Almighty God will go with you, and He will not leave you no matter how tough the going seems. Being people of integrity flows from the strength God grants. May God bless the courageous heroes of September 11th.
