Michael W. Smith, the chart topping Christian recording artist with three Grammys and 34 Dove Awards, has taken on the role of thespian, marking his silver screen acting debut with a film by fellow musician and friend Steve Taylor called The Second Chance.
Costarring veteran stage actor and playwright jeff obafemi carr, the movie opened in limited release February 17. Now look for it on DVD.
Smith plays Ethan Jenkins, the assistant pastor and music minister of a mega-church called The Rock and the shoe-in replacement for his soon-to-retire senior pastor dad. Everything is going well for this wealthy, upper-crust pastor’s son who has found success as a newly published author.
But then one Sunday pastor Jake Sanders (jeff obafemi carr) of the sister church plant, Second Community Church, confronts The Rock congregation on their lack of true servanthood toward his African-American congregation in the projects, and Ethan gets blamed for the controversy.
Ethan is reassigned to working alongside Jake at Second Community. Both Ethan and Jake must come to terms with their own prejudices and lack of compassion as they are called to something higher than their original individual plans: unity, racial reconciliation, and true repentance.
