- “Laughter is Prozac for the soul,” says comedian Mike G. Williams, producer of a new DVD series that proves comedy can be both clean and funny.
The Comedy Bus series from Ino Records and Premier Productions features Christian comedians from around the country. With imaginative routines, silly songs, and humorous on-stage antics, the series offers laughs while keeping the subject matter safe for the whole family. The first two volumes of the series, “Laugh Out Loud” and “Class Clowns” are now available.
“Laugh Out Loud,” features funny men Cleto Rodriguez, Paul Aldrich, Robert G. Lee, Rich Praytor, Mike G. Williams, and the comic duo Bean & Bailey. The diverse performers offer up a variety of routines sure to please every member of the family.
Many of the comics are well-known, such as Robert G. Lee, who has been a top warm-up comic in Hollywood for nearly two decades. In this role he entertained audiences between costume and set changes, for shows such as “Just Shoot Me,” “Becker,” “The Drew Carey Show,” and “The New Adventures of Old Christine.”
The film’s producer, comedian Mike G. Williams, will also be recognized by many as a familiar face. As a writer, his material has appeared on “The Tonight Show,” “Conan O’Brian,” and “David Letterman.” He has also appeared at major Christian music festivals across the country.
The comedy show also features a couple musical acts. Paul Aldrich, whose talents have been showcased on Showtime and at The Improv, offers several entertaining silly songs. And perhaps lesser-known, but funny none-the-less, the comic duo Bean & Bailey steals the show with their witty banter and inventive song lyrics.
Rounding out volume one of the series is the comedy of Cleto Rodriguez, a featured performer for Promise Keepers 2008, and Rich Praytor who received the American Gospel Music Award for Best Comedian for the Year. Volume two, “Class Clowns,” offers acts from all of the great comedians featured on the first DVD along with Kenn Kington, who explains to the audience why he wears women’s socks.
Each comic offers a brief performance giving the show a nice, steady pace. “Laugh Out Loud,” and “Class Clowns” run about an hour each, and provide plenty of laughs.
Both DVDs also offers bonus features, though these really do not add a wealth of new material. Apart from a few of the comic’s “worst stories” from the road, the comedians mostly introduce themselves and advertise their Web sites. More time behind the scenes with the comedians would have enriched the bonus section, but overall, the DVDs are a great choice for families looking for quality entertainment.
At one point in his routine, Williams comments that “God allows humor to exist to bless you.” The Comedy Bus series does just that. The next time you need a good dose of laughter, gather your family and take it for spin!
Note: The comedians from this series will also be launching ‘The Comedy Bus Tour’ in Spring 2009. To see when they will be near your city, check out their Web site.
