CBN.com – The New Life Family Center of Elizabeth City, North Carolina, saw the families left homeless by Hurricane Katrina and wanted to reach out.
They bought and renovated a home to provide emergency housing for a New Orleans family.
Pastors Phil and Kathy Dowdy explain, “I believe that when we get up to minister that we must live out what we preach and we teach. So therefore when we say we are going to adopt a family and put them in a ‘healing house,’ we do it.
“Our church has grown as a result of the outreach that has taken place because I believe we are a doing church. And not just a speaking church.
Kathy says, “It was overwhelming how many people wanted to help. They’re like, 'Do you need this? Do you need that? I have dishes. Let me go buy dishes.' Different ministries would say, 'What do you need?' They gave financially. They gave out of their own resources.”
Donald and Michelle and their children are living rent-free for a full year.
Michelle says, “We would’ve been homeless because with the way things were going. We had nowhere to go. We wouldn’t have had anything. We wouldn’t have had a place. . . The homeless shelters wouldn’t even take us.
Sharon Mizell worked directly with the renovation of Healing House.
“There were just a lot of things that needed to be upgraded,” says Sharon. “What I was always surprised at is how every need was met. We would be praying. We’d say we had a need. The next thing you know God has provided the need just out of no where seemingly.”
Michelle says, “They brought me home. I have a home to come to. Not an apartment. Not a hotel room. I’m home. I feel comfortable. I can sleep at night. I’m home.”
For their extensive generosity to Hurricane Katrina survivors, The 700 Club congratulates New Life Family Center of Elizabeth City, North Carolina for being America’s Church of the Week.
