– Samara Parker is the proud mother of two, and she's willing to
do whatever it takes to make sure her family has a good home. She used to live
with her parents until she applied for the homeownership and savings program
at Grove Baptist Church in Portsmouth, Va.
Through this program, Samara now has a house to live in for two years.
"Our expectation once they move in is that they pay the rent on time,
attend two to three workshops that the church sponsors on debt reduction,
financial management and we also expect them to give back to the community,"
says Dr. Maggi Curry Williams, director of administration for the program.
If Samara follows these guidelines, the church will give her back all of
her rent money plus interest. That's close to $15,000 - money samara can use
as a down payment on her very own home.
"My goal is to have my own home," says Samara. "When I leave
here, I'll be moving into my own home that I'll be able to purchase for my
self. At the end of this program, I am hoping that I can take all my blessings
and minister and witness to others. If you are faithful and obedient, He can
work it out for you."
Pastor Melvin Marriner says, "God desires for us to prosper, not just
spiritually, but economically, socially, and financially."
And he's seen Samara make huge strides.
"What I've really noticed is her own lifestyle has changed," says
Rev. Marriner. "She's more excited about life, more enthusiastic about
God."
