– The war continues in Iraq. With the holiday’s fast approaching,
most of the soldiers won’t be home for Christmas. But one church in Gumboro,
Del., is sending some of the soldiers a little taste of home.
Bay Shore Community Church is packing 85 individual boxes and 10 oversized
boxes. They will send them to troops in Iraq and other parts of the world.
"We had a burden to let the soldiers know that they weren't forgotten,
that what they are doing is important, and that we love them and we feel like
the job they are doing is something worthwhile," says John Dorrough,
missions pastor at Bay Shore. "They are loved and appreciated."
Each box has a variety of things for the soldiers, such as 30 handwritten
Christmas cards from members of Bay Shore Community Church, a $40 gift card,
three dozen homemade cookies, fudge, beef jerky, which is a favorite among
the soldiers, and lots of candy.
Neal Elmore just got back from Iraq. He was there the first time the church
sent out boxes.
"It's the happiest feeling that there is for however long that you can
enjoy that one or two or however many items. Even notes or letters are a great
thing," says Neal.
Miguel and Velma Ten’s son is still in Iraq. Even though they wish
they could have their son home for Christmas, they’ll rest a little
easier knowing he will receive one of these packages.
"I was very excited that my son was receiving a package and that his
whole platoon was receiving packages," Miguel says.
The church was able to raise more than $5,000 in two weeks to get these packages
on their way.
"It was a blessing to us, and I was so thankful that they were willing
to bless the soldiers," adds Velma.
