Do You Know Who You Really Are?

CBN.comStudent…teacher, single…married, employee…employer, spouse…parent--so many roles to fill throughout our lives, so many ways to validate our worth.

We are so used to defining ourselves by our corporate positions or our stations in life or what we do that we miss the simplicity of who we really are regardless of our circumstances and regardless of the changing seasons of our lives: children of God.

In the corporate world, there is a saying: "It is all about who you know." The same is true in the spiritual realm. Our identity ultimately has everything to do with our love relationship with God the Father. It's all about Who--with a capital W--we know.

Who is your Daddy? Do you know how He views you? Do you truly own what He says about you, you who have placed total faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ for your salvation?

He says that you are a child of God, a blessed son or daughter of the King, beloved in His sight, a co-heir with Christ Jesus, eternally His.

Phew! I don't know about you, but I like the sound of that more and more as the pressures of life and my surrounding culture try to tell me how I should qualify myself.

We should not measure ourselves by our clothing sizes, our height, our weight, our strengths, our smarts, our spouses or lack of them, our abilities, our job titles, our friends, our possessions, our children or lack of them, or our popularity.

All we really need to remember is that we are the King's kids.

And family relationships are not earned -- they just are. It is all about blood lines. It is about DNA. Likewise, we are eternally children of God, enjoying all the benefits and privileges of living in His kingdom.

But what if we are mean or stubborn?

We are still His children.

What if we get angry with God?

We are still His children.

What if we lose all of our money and become destitute?

We are still His children.

What if we sin terribly and go to prison?

We are still His children.

What if we are no longer beautiful, or physically fit, or talented, or popular?

We are still His children.

In Romans 8:35, Paul asks, "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?"

Are you holding your breath? Expecting the worst? Expecting to hear a list of when God is going to withhold His love from you?

Then listen to what Paul says a couple of verses later in this same passage: "I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 8:38-39).

It is good to be in God's family, don't you think? We gain access to His lavish love for us anytime, anywhere, wherever we find ourselves, strong or weak, beautiful or ugly, sinful or saintly.

So next time you are feeling low because you have not become "all that you can be" or you have missed the mark or the world has gotten you confused about your worth, look toward Heaven. Talk to Daddy. He will straighten out the issue. It is a done deal, sealed by the Holy Spirit. Whether you believe it or not, you are His beloved.

Rest in that.
