CBN.com -Keith and Elia Thompson enjoy living on their family’s ranch in El Paso, Texas.
“I just love the peace, the outdoors,” says Keith. “You get away from the city from a day of work and you can just sit out and watch the quail run and see your horses.”
They also love the peace of mind that comes with being completely debt free, a decision they made in 2012.
“When my husband and I read in the Bible that we should owe no man anything, was really when I think that kind of sparked his desire to be completely out of debt,” Elia recalls.
At the time, the couple was trying to pay off twenty-six rental properties they had purchased over the years. In all, they owed over $450,000. With Elia in real estate and Keith working in his family’s machine shop, paying off that debt could take years.
“The way it was going and the way I saw where the figures were, it'd be in our sixties when we'd have it paid off,” says Keith.
Then Keith remembered the stories he had seen on the 700 Club.
“I've heard and seen miracles on tv showing how debt is paid down,” he recalls.
Elia remembers that time. “My husband said, ‘You know what? There's no reason why we can't believe that we can be out of debt in a year's time.’”
So the Thompsons committed to praying and reading their Bible daily. They also knew it was important to continue tithing. In fact, they increased their giving to their church and to CBN.
“The Lord just started making things happen,” Elia recalls. “Money started coming in and everything that I took I applied to pay off loans.”
The Thompsons say things just got better. They decided sell their home, but the appraisal came in $100,000 less than what they were asking. They still had faith that it would sell… and less than a month later, it did.
“The Lord brought somebody in that really wanted the house,” says Keith. “And that right there was a miracle in itself, that we got our asking price, at $100,000 more than what the appraised price was.”
With the equity and other money coming in, Keith and Elia paid off all their debt in less than a year. They say that obedience is key to financial freedom.
“The Lord is no respecter of persons and he will do it,” says Elia. “If you are obedient to his word and you give him back what he requires, he will provide all things and increase you.”
Keith agrees. “It's not just that you give when you – when you can, or you give, you know, a couple times a year, God wants your consistency.”
“And if he can do it for us, he will do it for you! ” Elia grins.
