Dallas, TX - On any given evening, you can find Johnny and Suzette Eldred relaxing in front of the television watching The 700 Club. They TIVO every episode! And it was The 700 Club that taught the Eldreds what the Bible says about giving.
“We were exposed to the teaching on tithing,” says Johnny, “that everything comes from God. We decided we were going to draw the line and no matter what happed we were going to continue giving our tithe.”
Johnny was a medical machinery technician, but right after they started tithing, he lost his job.
“I was angry,” says Johnny. “And then I got scared because what are we going to do? How are we going to make it?”
“Why are we going through this if we are tithing,” wondered Suzette. “Where is God in all of this?”
“It was scary,” says Johnny. “I won’t lie. I was petrified.”
After unemployment kicked in, he decided to continue following God’s principles on tithing.
“There was never a time where we said, ‘no we are not tithing, we can’t,’” says Johnny. “Because we had both made that commitment that yes we would tithe no matter what.”
The couple saw amazing things happen with their finances.
“But every time we had a bill come,” says Johnny, “when I was getting unemployment, it was not enough to pay our house payment. I would do a little job just in time. Suzette would say, ‘oh we’ve got a bill coming up.’ And I get a phone call and hear, ‘Johnny I need you to do this.’ And it would be just enough to pay that bill. And that’s God.”
When the Eldreds had forty-five dollars left of their last unemployment check, Johnny received a message on their answering machine.
Johnny remembers the message, “We got your resume, and we want to offer you a position. You are a candidate for our company.”
Johnny got the job, making more than before, with better benefits.
“It was a total relief,” says Johnny, “a giant weight was lifted off my back. I knew God was going to help us. I knew He would and He did.”
They know it was God’s faithfulness and their faithfulness to stick with tithing.
“We needed a certain amount of money to get through this and God gave that to us,” says Johnny. “I think God was showing us to trust in Him.”
