Corwin and Mary Murray love their small town life in Patterson, Louisiana, about an hour outside New Orleans. Mary is a high school English teacher and Corwin is the sports reporter for the local newspaper and gets to work from home.
Corwin shares about his work. “I enjoy being a sports reporter because it keeps me close to sports which I played growing up. Also, it keeps me close to home.”
Being home so much gives him a chance to catch the 700 Club. The Murrays are CBN partners. They joined after Mary began learning about tithing and asked Corwin if they could pledge.
Corwin understood the importance of giving. “Basically my wife was saying that we are blessed and we should share that with others. When you are in that situation you should do more, you are required to do more.”
But when the couple was living in Texas, Mary lost her job. They knew it would be tough living on just Corwin’s income as a sports reporter at a Dallas newspaper, but one month later, Corwin lost his job too.
Corwin says he felt, “Shocked. Scared. Didn’t know what to do. The whole industry I was in was downsizing. The newspaper industry, so it wasn’t just me it was all my friends in the business. It was bad. It was really bad.”
Mary was convinced everything would ok. But Corwin didn’t buy it.
“And I’m like ‘How’s it going to work out? How is it going to be ok when I go from making $1800 a week to an unemployment check of $385? It’s not going to be alright.’”
Mary explains, “There were some days where I’d say ‘Ok, I’m telling Corwin everything is going to be ok but I need someone to tell me it’s going to be ok.’ I can do the math. I was looking at the bills and thinking, ‘My money is not going to be as long as this month is going to be.’”
The Murrays tithed off their unemployment checks even though the bills were piling up.
One day, Corwin got the idea to call his former boss at his hometown newspaper. He’d been a college intern there. He offered Corwin a job on the spot.
“I was just happy. I was going to continue doing what I love which was writing and being a reporter. So I felt blessed right away and I knew it was a blessing from God.”
And when they moved to Louisiana, Mary landed a teaching job, making them once again, a two income family.
“I can remember thinking ‘God, thanks’. Because now all the things I’ve been telling Corwin, ‘It’s going to work out, it’s going to work out.’ It really has happened.”
They make sure they tithe off those two incomes every month.
Mary continues, “You cannot afford not to tithe. I would tell someone who is on the brink, I would say, ‘Hey, try it and let God prove you wrong!’”
