Christian Leader of the Month
Condoleezza Rice
Former National Security Advisor and Secretary of State
CBN.com From her promising beginning in Birmingham, Alabama, to a successful career in the White House, Condoleezza Rice has proven her steadfast resolve and superior leadership skills time and time again. The daughter of a Presbyterian minister, Rice looked to her parents for love and support and to her faith for guidance along her path to success.
At age 38, she became the youngest provost at Stanford University and later served as the country’s National Security Advisor and Secretary of State — the first woman and the second African American to hold the latter position. In her latest book, No Higher Honor: A Memoir of My Years in Washington, Rice recalls her remarkable journey, made possible by her courage, strong sense of self and an unwavering devotion to faith.
On finding her faith:
“For me it was a kind of a gradual process because never one day in my life can I ever remember doubting the existence of God. I didn’t go through those kinds of crisis of faith that people do. I think in part it was that my father, who was a trained theologian and was willing to debate me and let me reason about my faith.”
On the positive influence of her teachers:
“…They always told you, ‘If you are twice as good, if you worked hard, if you get an education, if you speak the language well, if you’re true to faith and family and community, then you may not be able to control your circumstances, but you can control your reaction to your circumstances and you can still have a productive life.’”
On the role religion plays in her life:
“When my mother died or when my father became ill and died, that’s when I really understood for the first time the phrase, ‘…the peace that passeth understanding.’ Because there are things you can’t understand. But still you can find a certain peace. It was the first time that my intellect actually was pushed aside and I had to come exposed in a sense to Christ.”
