God's Faithfulness

I Am Supposed to Get Married First!

Lee Warren

CBN.com He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong,
upright and just is he.
-- Deuteronomy 32:4

When she was twenty-four, her twenty-year-old sister got married, and Amy felt devastated. “I am the oldest sister,” Amy remarked, recalling the event. “I am supposed to be the one who gets married first! I felt sorry for myself for a long time after that, and I am ashamed to admit I spent a good deal of time being angry at God for allowing things to happen that way.”

Amy’s sister got married nine years ago. Amy continued to pray for a spouse after her sister’s wedding, but recently she realized something about those prayers. “I have been praying all along, but the majority of my prayers have been very selfish,” Amy said. “I have wanted immediate answers, and unfortunately God doesn’t work that way.”

She recently went through a breakup with her fiance, and it changed her prayer life. Only after the breakup did she “start praying for God’s will and not my own to be done.” That’s one of the most difficult prayers to pray when you yearn for something as significant as a spouse. Amy reached the point where she was willing to trust God’s ways above her own. The journey took her nine years to complete, but I suspect she completed it faster than many of us will.

When we question God about his fairness regarding any part of our lives, we deny the truth of Deuteronomy 32:4. Let’s look at the verse a little more in depth. If “all his ways are just,” then his timing can’t possibly be unfair. If he is “a faithful God who does no wrong,” then he’s a personal God who is faithful and fair to us in all circumstances. Even when we watch other—sometimes younger—people walk down the aisle before us.

Digging Deeper into Deuteronomy 32:4

1. Describe the emotions you felt the last time you were angry that someone who was younger than you got married.

2. What motivated those feelings?

3. Have you confessed that motivation as sin? If not, take the time to do it now.

4. How close are you to reaching the point where you can honestly say that you accept God’s will and that you will pray for his will regarding your life?

5. How will praying this way change your prayer life?
