'National Treasure'

- A whole lot of Indiana Jones, plus a little bit of the DaVinci Code,
this amusing, arm-grabbing adventure has an adventurer stealing the Declaration
of Independence in order to protect it from a villainous cad bent on, well,
stealing the Declaration of Independence. You see, Ben Franklin and the boys
came into possession of a fantastic treasure. To protect its whereabouts from
King George, it was hidden, and the map was decoded with an invisible process
on the back of the famous document. Skip ahead a couple hundred years and
you have a family of historians arguing that the treasure is not a legend,
but indeed exists. For years they have sought out and found clues to its existence
and whereabouts. But no one else in the scientific or historical communities
believes them. And when our hero realizes that a fellow explorer will go to
any length, including murder, to posses the treasure, he must protect the
document himself.
If you can leave all reasoning power at the ticket booth, you will have a
fun time with this witty, clean and often exciting adventure. Course, if you
begin to use logic, the story quickly falls apart. I kept thinking as I viewed
the protagonist going to such Mission Impossible lengths to protect
the document from being heisted, rather than taking the document himself,
why doesn’t he just set a trap for the bad guys? Well, because then
we’d have no story. Or at least no adventure that takes us to nearly
every Founding Fathers location from New York to Philadelphia.
The film has a great look, the direction is lively and once again, Nicolas
Cage gives an interesting, likable performance.
Rated PG: The film has a few minor expletives,
but I caught no harsh or profane language. The film receives its rating mostly
for the tense situations and some violence. The violence being guns shooting,
chase scenes, and our heroes placed in perilous predicaments, but all this
activity is handled with Disney discretion).
