Why Losing Weight
Takes Faith!
The Bible says that “without faith it is impossible to
please God.” Well, I say, without faith it is also impossible
to lose weight – at least for me! Here’s an example
that explains why I would say that.
Last week, it was announced that CBN.com’s daily format
meeting would be held outdoors. The reason for this field trip
was to make sure that everyone in the department knew the correct
route out of the building, and the exact location where we are
to convene in the event of a fire drill, bomb scare or other
event requiring evacuation.
As I stood at the appropriate place, my thoughts drifted back
to the day a few years earlier when a suspicious package arrived
in the CBN mailroom. We were ordered to evacuate as a precaution.
Although the contents of the package turned out to be harmless,
it took several hours to confirm this.
Since I’ve started this weight loss effort, I now drink
anywhere from 8-10 glasses of water a day. Were we to have another
such event, I would never survive 3 hours without a bathroom
break! I’ve thought of drinking less water during the
day, just in case. Yet, trusting God has seemed the better solution.
During the past two and a half weeks I have definitely needed
faith in God to keep my weight loss efforts from being derailed.
Sometimes I’ve had to just trust Him when I’ve
worried that turning down opportunities to eat out with friends
would alienate them. Other times, when the event was unavoidable,
I had to trust that He would provide the grace to overcome temptation
at a special event – like our church’s annual pig-pickin’
picnic this past weekend!
1 Corinthians 10:13 says, “No temptation has overtaken
you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who
will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but
with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you
may be able to bear it.” (NKJV)
He does promise to help us with temptation. Now there’s
a reason to shout, Hallelujah! Office goodies, special events,
invitations, and gifts from well-meaning friends mean I need
a lot of escape routes!
