“Increasing Achievement through Character Development: It’s a Hole-in-One for Kids” Conference


CBN.comThe Regent University School of Education presents a character education conference that emphasizes the impact of strong character on academic achievement. On October 7 and 8, join noted educators Thomas Lickona, Hal Urban, Kay Burke, Robin Fogarty, Rick Wormeli, and Marcus Nelson to learn about how you can, in accordance with the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) act, develop safe schools, strong character, and citizenship among our nation’s youth. Research as well as best practice will be addressed throughout the conference. This conference will following a unique golf competition and afternoon skills clinic being held on Thursday, October 6. The golf event will pair middle school, at-risk children with business and community leaders. Highlights will be covered at the conference.

On Friday, October 7, Dr. Hal Urban will speak on “Life’s Greatest Lessons: Celebrating Life and Academic Excellence.” Hear Dr. Urban share his strategies for creating a caring classroom community and how to bring out the best in your students. Dr. Urban is a nationally acclaimed teacher with 35 years of experience in a public school classroom and the author of Life’s Greatest Lessons—selected as National Inspiration Book of the Year. Dr. Robin Fogarty will also speak on Friday about “Literacy Matters Across the Curriculum.” This session with Dr. Fogarty discusses literacy across the content areas, and how literacy impacts self-esteem, character development, and general well-being. Known as “the teachers’ teacher,” Dr. Fogarty has consulted with state departments and ministries of education in the United States and around the world, and is the author of several books.

On Saturday, October 8, join Dr. Thomas Lickona for “Smart and Good Schools: Developing Excellence and Ethics for Success in School and Beyond.” In this session, Dr. Lickona describes research-based practices for a new vision of character education: the integration of excellence and ethics. Dr. Lickona is a developmental psychologist and professor of education at the State University of New York at Cortland. He currently directs the Center for the Fourth and Fifth Rs and is on the board of directors of the Character Education Partnership. Dr. Kay Burke will also speak on Saturday on the topic of “From Golf Etiquette to Classroom Etiquette: What Kids Need to Succeed.” Dr. Burke’s workshops are rigorous and relevant, and laced with her contagious sense of humor. Dr. Burke is the author of What to do with the kid who...Developing Cooperation, Self-Discipline, and Responsibility in the Classroom, 2nd edition, and 16 other books. She presents workshops on positive discipline, authentic assessment, and student, teacher and administrator portfolios.

Luncheon Speakers for this conference will be Mr. Rick Wormeli, speaking on “Character and Behavior into Learning” and Dr. Marcus Nelson, presenting “Beyond Rhetoric for Kids: You Can Do It If You Put Your Mind to It.”
