THE MAKING OF A MAN
Tim Brown, legendary NFL wide receiver, has faced many situations throughout his life – on and off the field – that has shaped him into the man he is today. He has learned valuable lessons about how to honor God and live with integrity even in the spotlight.
On the field, Tim learned how persistence creates confidence. Throughout his career, Tim was persistent even after he failed on the field. He persisted in his training and believed what others told him about being a talented player, which built his confidence and made him an excellent player. Real men are confident in what they are doing.
Tim also learned the importance of showing and receiving respect. In the world of football, players have to earn respect, because it is not often given to them. Tim learned through several situations the importance of not giving in to others taunting, to give respect where it was due, and to earn it from others by working hard. Respect is often given when we make sure our actions line up with our words.
Off the field, Tim has faced many temptations perpetuated by success and fortune. He emphasizes how real men face and overcome temptation. He shares how God helped him escape tempting situations. There were times that women had made themselves available to Tim and he was able to find the escape route God left. Tim has learned the importance of taking responsibility and how that is a reflection of a man. At the pinnacle of his football career, Tim was not walking with the lord and his girlfriend became pregnant. They kept the child and Tim took responsibility and cared for his child rather than avoiding the situation. True men take responsibility for their actions and situations that they are part of.
RISING STAR
Tim Brown grew up in a family of six. His dad worked days and nights to provide for the family. His mom worked small jobs on the side and took care of the house and children. The whole family was involved in church except Tim’s father but he supported them going. Tim spent most of his childhood at church and enjoyed it. When he was seven years old, he saw their Pastor cast a demonic spirit out of a member of his family. This experience instilled in him the knowledge that God was real.
As Tim grew up he became increasingly better as an athlete. After high school, Notre Dame picked Tim as a wide receiver. Legendary coach Lou Holtz told him that he might be the best football player that he’d ever seen, which started Tim on the fast track to winning the Heisman Trophy. As the spotlight increased on Tim so did the struggles off the field. Tim’s girlfriend cheated on him and he found another girlfriend, which he had a child out of wedlock with. Tim and his girlfriend kept the child and he provided for them but they were not able to make the relationship work. Tim continued sleeping around with other girls, which only increased the gap between him and God.
Before the age of thirty, Tim began to feel convicted of his lifestyle. He was currently pursuing a relationship with a singer, when the producer pulled him aside and told him that this lifestyle was not for him. Tim ended the relationship and turned back to God. Tim started walking out his faith but it was not easy. The first year most of the players didn’t believe he had really changed. Tim persevered and the second year many of the players noticed Tim wasn’t going back and sought him for advice. Soon after Tim met his wife Sherice, a committed believer. They were married and now have four children.
