The Day of Prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem is "a call to sustained fervent, informed global intercession for the plans and purposes of God for Jerusalem and all her people," as Psalm 122:6-8 says.
Since its origin in February 2002, this is the first of what will be an annual prayer effort to be observed on the first Sunday of October, to coincide with the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur.
Five hundred global Christian ministries representing 50 countries have come together for this effort, with more expected to join. So far, 50,000 churches are participating. This has been the largest coalition in church history.
Many prominent Christian leaders are a part of the Day of Prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem effort. Dr. Jack Hayford, from Church on the Way, is the other co-chairman. Some other key members are Dr. Pat Robertson, Kay Arthur, Michael W. Smith, and Dick Eastman.
This is just the beginning of letting people see the origin of Jewish roots in Christian faith and see the importance of Israel today.
The Day of Prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem is so that people will take local responsibility and get involved by going on the Web site, registering and getting a prayer packet (this includes teachings by Dr. Jack Hayford and others, an Israel teaching DVD, and a 16-month Jerusalem prayer calendar). The local church needs to take part.
In Israel, this day of prayer is getting respect and recognition from the Jewish community. The Jerusalem Post wrote a big article about it. Key Jewish leaders are going to participate in it – members of the Kinesset and the President of Israel are going to be at the event, and the Chief Rabbi and Benjamin Netanyahu have endorsed the event. Dr. Pat Robertson is the keynote speaker at the Day of Prayer in Jerusalem on Oct. 3, 2004.
The Day of Prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem started February 2002. Robert was called to pray and lead a coalition in New York. Relationships between the attendees were established. Then, they connected with Jack Hayford, who has been fundamental to the effort.
Robert says it is important to define our relationships to Israel as Americans and Christians – realizing America's roots with Israel as a nation and as Christians to our Jewish roots.
INTIMACY
We have to discern the season we are in. Intimacy with God in Jesus is the message, and that intimacy is going to be recaptured. Robert grew up in the Assemblies of God church in Buffalo and accepted the Lord as a child in Sunday School.
He lived in Jerusalem for one year in the early 1990s. Since that time Robert has met most Israeli leaders and continues to minister in Israel, having been a worship leader at the Feast of Tabernacles.
In 1992 Robert says the Lord spoke to him that He would send revival to major Northeast cities – New York, Boston, Philadelphia – and that because of the major influence of those cities, many people would be affected. New York has the largest Jewish population outside of Israel and is the major center for media and finance.
“The Lord wants to see a breakthrough in this nation,” Robert
says.
