Lisa Whelchel was a child star and didn’t have a forum to learn about friendships. She moved to Hollywood when she was twelve. While other kids were learning about friendships, she was working in television.
The experiences Lisa had with friendships were not positive She was shy as a child and got into acting at an early age to help her overcome that shyness. As long as she was performing she was fine, but one-on-one, she still had a hard time relating to others.
Throughout her life it was difficult for Lisa to allow friends to get close to her. She had no consistent connection in her life so she depended on herself to keep everything together. She built walls around herseld as a defense mechanism. She learned to be transparent without being vulnerable.
Later when she became a writer, Lisa could share about herself in her books and her writing more than she could in a face-to-face interaction. Lisa had theUps desire to connect intimately, but she didn’t really know how to do that. In recent years Lisa has learned how to be more honest and vulnerable and develop more satisfying friendships in her life. She is still understanding how to make good friendships.
These experiences provided the back drop for Lisa's latest book, Friendship for Grown-Ups.
