Crafting a Southern Living Christmas

–Southern Living magazine editors gathered their favorite ideas for festive decorating in Christmas with Southern Living 2012. Kimberly says decorating for Christmas doesn’t mean you have to break your budget. “I love the idea of embellishing with something that’s already there,” says Kimberly. Use the holly or magnolia leaves from your back yard. Think about the elements that are already existing in your home and add to that. “At Christmas time, a little goes a long way,” says Kimberly. “So less is more especially this time of year.”
- Adorn a mailbox with holly, magnolia leaves and fir (page 52). “You don’t have to be a master florist,” says Kimberly. Just lay out the leaves naturally.
- Roses in mint julep cups (page 70). “The white looks pretty and the roses are unexpected at Christmas time,” says Kimberly. Use any vases you have. Spray paint them silver. You can pick up mint julep cups in a thrift store.
- Citrus and spice centerpieces (page 156-157). This is a great holiday look. As the oranges age, historically Southerners would throw the oranges in the wood burning fireplace for the aroma.
- Peppermint wreath (page 158-159). Kimberly says this is a simple way to welcome guests. Hot glue mints to a foam wreath, add a bow and hang. To use outdoors, seal with clear decoupage glue.
PARTY PLANNING
Kimberly grew up in Dallas, Texas. Her mom had pretty dishes and linens and her friends would always borrow them for special occasions. Kimberly realized there was no place in town where you could rent pretty pieces for events. She told her mom that they should start charging people and so they did. Kimberly started a party rental business which she ran for 3 years. When she was 24, Kimberly had the opportunity to write her first book on entertaining. Then one day a friend of hers told her a Southern lifestyle magazine was looking for an entertaining expert. After a 9 month application process, Kimberly finally met with the editors and was offered the job. Today she represents the magazine on television and in the media. She also contributes to the magazine regularly.
One of her family favorite traditions is to volunteer for the Salvation Army. Every year, Kimberly and her family volunteer to ring the Salvation Army bell for a day at a Dallas mall. “Everyone takes shifts and we all break for a nice family lunch together,” says Kimberly. “It is such a wonderful reminder of all the things we have to be grateful for and a fantastic way to give back and help others.”
