CBN.com -ALMOST BROTHERS
Jamie Dailey and Darrin Vincent are as close as brothers as they could be, without actually sharing any genes. They released their first joint-album in 2008, but were playing Bluegrass music long before that. Their paths to acclaim began many years ago. Both men were raised in musical families and have played bluegrass since the age of three – Jamie in Tennessee and Darrin in Missouri. They apprenticed with legendary acts, Jamie with Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, and Darrin with his sister Rhonda Vincent, the late John Hartford, and Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder. They believe that one of the great surprises and blessings a person can experience in life is meeting an unrelated soul-mate. Jamie and Darrin met at the 2001 IBMA Awards show in Louisville and discovered an uncanny harmony in their vocal blend, as well as their attitudes toward music, business, and their Christian faith. Says Darrin, “Although we’re not brothers, we discovered that our voices blended pretty naturally. We’ve worked on vocal phrasing and pronunciation to make the blend even stronger.” Jamie and Darrin talked, prayed, and planned for five years before committing to the closest thing to brotherhood: a musical partnership. Since then, their partnership has paid off. Their first album, Dailey &Vincent, was #1 on Billboard’s Top Bluegrass Albums chart, as well as the Bluegrass Unlimited and Bluegrass Music Profiles album charts, and it yielded the #1 singles “By the Mark,” “More Than a Name on a Wall” and “Sweet Carrie.” It was named Album of the Year, one of seven awards the group took home in an unprecedented feat at the 2008 International Bluegrass Music Awards Show. Never before had an act been named Entertainer and Emerging Artist in the same year, an honor that both humbles and challenges the duo. As Darrin said during one of their acceptance speeches at the awards show, “We’re going to give 100% to bring you the best bluegrass music we can.”
Besides their love of music, Jamie and Darrin are like brothers in other ways, as well. They share a deep Christian perspective and witness. The men each gave his heart to Christ when he was a boy. Darrin says he was 9 years old when he felt the Holy Spirit stir within him, while at church on a Sunday evening. He went to the altar and prayed the Salvation prayer. Jamie says he was 15 years old when he prayed for salvation. On a less serious note, the men also share a fun-loving penchant for high jinx. When asked, one of the men says, “Oh yes, I like to hike.” The other bursts out laughing when they realize they were asked about “high jinx,” not “hiking.” Their good-natured taunting resembles what you’d hear from brothers. Though they like to tease one another, they say they don’t take their pranks too far. “The worst we’ve done is throw a band member off the bus going 70 miles-per-hour to see if he could bounce,” one says with a serious tone. After pausing, they laugh. “We’re kidding, of course.” Darrin says their
pranks consist of things like taking a mattress out of someone’s bunk, or pouring ice-cold water into the shower when Jamie’s in there. “There’s nowhere to run in a three by three shower,” he says, laughing. “We like to have fun,” they say. The group spends about 140 days out of the year touring together, so the light-hearted camaraderie keeps things relaxed and enjoyable on their tour bus. Like brothers, Jamie and Darrin have different personalities. “Darrin’s just real blunt and forward,” explains Jamie. “He laughs all over his body and you’ll hear him three miles away. I was raised in the country but like living near the city. Darrin likes living out in the country.” Darrin says, “I’m not much of a planner, but he’s a big planner. But Jamie’s always doing crazy stuff, trying to get me to crack up while we’re on stage.” Darrin and Jamie are also business partners, dividing the load as bandleaders. “I take care of the financial matters, and I also write the show and a lot of the songs,” says Jamie. “Darrin takes care of the music production and all the tour arrangements.
THE GOSPEL SIDE
Dailey & Vincent has recently released a new album, in partnership with Cracker Barrel Old Country Store to showcase their gospel side. “These songs are really special,” says Darrin. “It’s our favorite music to sing,” adds Jamie about their Gospel tracks. The release has been widely praised. The Gospel Side of Dailey & Vincent debuted #1 on the Billboard Top Bluegrass Albums chart (week ending January 15). The album also reached #3 on the Billboard Contemporary Christian chart and #61 on the Top 200 chart. This CD is available exclusively at all Cracker Barrel locations and online at crackerbarrel.com. "We're thrilled and feel absolutely blessed that this album has been greeted so warmly," says Jamie. "We've always performed Gospel music in our shows and fans have asked when we were going to do a Gospel album," adds Darrin. The Bluegrass duo often performs Gospel music, but has never before had a wide-release of a Gospel Album. They did, however, release an album for Tennessee Bible College, with 100% of profit benefitting underprivileged students who couldn’t afford tuition. That album did exceptionally well, winning a Dove award in 2011. The Gospel Side of Dailey & Vincent is the group's second CD in the Cracker Barrel Old Country Store exclusive music program. Their first Cracker Barrel release, Dailey & Vincent Sing the Statler Brothers, won Bluegrass Album of the Year in 2010, plus a Grammy Award nomination.
