– "The roof was leaking, and the shingles had
come off the roof. We had damage to some of the vehicles here and
we got it patched up, but we’re waiting for the process to
get it repaired," says Pastor Wendel Smith of Faith Temple
Church in Wauchula, Florida.
After hurricanes like Charley and Frances strike, victims turn to
the local church for help. But how can a church help devestated
families when the church itself barely survives the storm?
Hit hard by Hurricane Charley, Faith Temple Church estimated their
damages to be at $75,000. But they have completely put their need
aside to focus on a community that is in greater need.
It is a community that is 70 percent Hispanic, home to many low
income migrant workers like Jose who lost his job after hurricane
Charley, and 18-year-old Martin who is the sole provider for his
brothers and sisters. Their mom is deceased and their father in
prison. The hurricane has made life even more difficult. But Pastor
Smith has reached out in love despite the needs of the church.
"I was just overwhelmed because just on Monday after the
storm I prayed 'Lord, this is bigger than me and I need help.'
(crying) And we just began to pray and believe." says Pastor
Smith. "Within 24 hours of the hurricane, even before we
got our roof covered we started feeding families."
Providing food, clothing, and hygiene items to low income migrant
families in the area, has provided an opportunity for the church
to share the word of God with the community.
"It touches your heart and you know that you’re on
target because since this has happened there has been so many
that we’ve been able to touch," says Pastor Smith.
"Young men like Martin, you hear the story of their life,
you know it's an opportunity that you're going to win family after
family to the Lord."
