CBN.com A tiny Methodist church on an island in the Chesapeake Bay has accomplished some mighty big things.
In 2003 a hurricane slammed into Hooper’s Island, knocking the church building off its foundation, but the foundation of faith supporting the people of the church remained steadfast.
Pastor Joseph Kelly recalls, "We stayed on the island the night of the storm. About one o’clock in the morning, I called some friends and asked them to pray, because things were so difficult. It was very clear when God said, 'If you take care of My people, I will take care of My church.'”
"There was so much horror," Colleen says. "But then, we all found hope. That’s what kept us going. It was just amazing seeing what God can do."
"So, when Katrina went through the Gulf coast states, this church knew the pain that the people were feeling," Pastor Kelly says. "So, their heart was to reach out and to help the way that people had helped us."
Hoopers Island is a fishing community made up of Chesapeake watermen who work hard for their money. But, because others had helped them rebuild their community and their church, these people stepped up to send money, thousands of shoes, hundreds of bicycles for the kids and loads of other things to the appreciative people in Slidell, Louisiana.
Jeanne Phillips says, "We sent our wave of love and what little we could do to help them. In turn, I know that when they have their opportunity they will send that same wave forward to help other people. That’s what it’s all about."
For showing us all how big-hearted the members of a little church can be when helping others, the 700 Club salutes Hoopers Memorial United Methodist Church in Hoopersville, Maryland – “America’s Church of the Week.”
A caring friend will be there to pray with you in your time of need.
