GLOBAL DAY OF PRAYER STARTED IN AFRICA
In July 2000 and in Febuary 2002 God gave two visions to Graham Power, a successful businessman and relatively new convert that Africa will become the "Light to the World." Over the years since those visions, an annual prayer event has exploded across Africa through Transformation Africa. In 2001, one stadium in Cape Town, South Africa was filled with 45,000 praying people. The next year it expanded to eight stadiums and 350,000 people. In 2003, 2.5 million gathered in 130 stadiums. On May 2, 2004, the movement exploded to ten times that many when 22 million rallied in prayer at more than 2,000 sites throughout the 56 nations of Africa. This year the African leaders have invited Christians around the world to pray with them in the first ever Global Day of Prayer.
In October 2004 Dr. Bakke was part of America's National Prayer Committee that participated in the International Prayer Committee meeting in Thailand when 70 prayer leaders from around the world began planning for this first Global Day of Prayer. The date set by Transformation Africa for this Global Day of Prayer is Pentecost Sunday, May 15, 2005, which is to be preceded by ten days of Prayer Toward a Greater Pentecost. Dr. Bakke and the Americans soon realized that this year our National Day of Prayer, a date set by Congress as the first Thursday in May, will be May 5, 2005, which is ten days before Pentecost Sunday. (May 5, 2005 is also Ascension Day commemorating Christ's ascension into heaven 40 days after his resurrection into heaven.)
Dr. Bakke says the only time that the church has gathered together in prayer in a persistent and unified manner for 10 days leading up to Pentecost was immediately following Christ's ascension (Acts 1:9 - 2:47). Constant prayer among 120 believers for ten days was followed by the power of the Holy Spirit falling and Peter preaching the gospel with 3,000 added to their number in one day. Dr. Bakke says this is the day God publicly gave birth to the church. He wonders what God will do with millions of His people crying out to Him for the nations. There are plans to continue to have a Global Day of Prayer annually thru 2010 to build momentum and fill the earth.
EVENTS PLANNED FOR GLOBAL DAY OF PRAYER
Dr. Bakke says they are expecting more than 200 million believers to unite for this global celebration on May 15th. This worldwide event will feature six hours of live prayer broadcasts: one hour from each continent across the globe. Relayed by satellite, radio and internet, this concert of prayer will be accessible from any location at any time. Currently, 125 countries have committed to this endeavor.
In the U.S. there will be a three-hour TV broadcast from 4-7 pm Central from Dallas's 20,000 seat Reunion Arena that will be led by T.D. Jakes, Rick Warren, Jack Graham, and Dr. Bakke. TBN and DayStar will carry the broadcast as well as Sky Angel.
90 DAYS OF BLESSING
In many communities following the Global Day of Prayer will be 90 Days of Blessings which are based on Acts 2:42-47 when the church had all things in common: they gave to the poor, had favor with all people, and the Lord added to the church daily. In Dallas all those who attend on May 15 will be recruited to bless the city over the next 90 days by painting schools, building Habitat for Humanity Homes, clean up trash in parks, mentor kids, participate in adopt-a-school programs, etc.
A caring friend will be there to pray with you in your time of need.
