Del McCoury on The Mysterious Ways of God

CBN.comThe phrase “pickin’ and a grinning” perfectly describes the Del McCoury Band in action. Del McCoury has been in the middle of music most of his life.

“By the time I was 11, I heard Earl Scruggs, and I thought that’s what I want to do. I want to play banjo like that,” he tells The 700 Club.

Del never did make it as a banjo player. Instead, he picked up the guitar and started singing. At first, being in the limelight wasn’t easy for Del.

“I was always pretty bashful as a kid,” he recalls. “That was really a hard thing for me to do -- to get up in front of people and play and sing.”

It didn’t take long before his anxiety was replaced with anticipation.

“I still get excited when I get on stage. I really do,” he says. “The most important thing about going on stage is if you can touch some folks with a song. It's the only way I have of doing it. It's the only thing I know how to do.”

Del earned a spot playing with the great Bill Monroe as one of his esteemed Bluegrass Boys. Del now plays with some of the best partners he could ask for -- his two sons Ronnie and Rob.

“I hadn’t really thought about them playing music. Then all of a sudden I turned around and here they are on stage with me. They are great musicians. I gotta thank the Lord for that too.”

It took Del a long time to achieve the amount of success that he had. He believes it was God that finally switched on the light of success.

“I think He had everything to do with that,” he says. “I was frustrated all through the years, but then, I think in these last years, He’s had all these things happen. I praise Him for it.

“In all these things I’d want something to happen now. It wouldn’t happen. Then later on, something would just fall in place. I would go, ‘That’s the Lord. He works in mysterious ways.’”

While Del might not know all the ways of God, there’s one thing he’s sure of. He says, “You better get down on your knees and pray.”
