Ginny Owens

Rocketown Records

CBN.com Discovering Ginny Owens remains one of Rocketown Records most glorious moments. A recent college graduate, Ginny entered Deer Valley Studio in 1998 to meet with label President Don Donahue and founder Michael W. Smith. In a matter of five minutes, she broke both their hearts with what has become a signature and legendary song, “If You Want Me To.” It was a very good day. And it set in motion an even better career.

Since then, Owens has astounded fans and wooed critics with her thoughtful, lyrical insights and melodic personal storytelling. She is an artist’s artist, winning praise from sources as wide-ranging as Sarah McLachlan and Jeremy Camp. Her combined career sales on three studio albums exceed half a million units, and she’s scored three No. 1 radio hits and a Dove Award for New Artist of the Year (2000). In addition to the gospel music community’s acclaim, Owens has impacted the general market through her ventures on Lilith Fair, the Sundance Film Festival and NPR.

Owens decided to share with her fans a new release, an intimate portrait of her live show. Recorded last fall at the world-famous House of Blues, Live from New Orleans reflects both an artist and a city steeped in rich history and undeniable music talent.

“I grew up in Jackson, Mississippi,” says Owens, “about two-and-a-half hours from New Orleans. I made enough trips to the city to fall in love with its mystique, diversity and fascinating history. It seemed a logical choice for the city in which to record a live concert… The evening was a party of nerves and fun all rolled into one. As it turned out, the crowd was incredibly responsive, and the tunes went to tape without too many hitches. I think it's safe to say that I'll remember that night forever. It certainly didn't let us down.”

Owens and her band delighted fans in this intimate, packed venue with an inspiring evening of classic and signature songs, making the Live from New Orleans CD a perfect companion piece to any Ginny Owens collection.

“By the time we recorded this project, the guys and I had been on the road together for more than 100 shows. I'm pretty sure that we could have played and sang these songs in our sleep. This set of live songs sounds lowkey, lived-in, relaxed. I have settled into the vocals in a new way, and the guys and I have rearranged some things as we've played concerts.”

In addition to hits from her previous studio releases (Without Condition, Something More and Beautiful), the live CD offers Ginny’s interpretation of the Lenny Kravitz song “Let Love Rule” as well as a sneak peek of her October release with the introduction of new song “Live Once.”

“Anyone who has heard my music knows how important simplicity is to me—simple life, simple truths, simple lyrics and simple melodies. ‘Live Once’ came to me as I thought once again about what I tell the world. The most important truth I ever want to communicate is that since we only live once here on this Earth, we must find something to sing about, something to live our lives by, to hang our hopes on. I believe that something is Jesus. He is the only thing we can sing about all the way to the end of life's road.”
